ken pritchett watched the romney speech from inside the convention hall. >> reporter: governor romney delivered an almost 40 minute speech. mr.romney had this crowd cheering many times on their feet from beginning to ends. it was through the audience that governor romney entered a convention hall, a two minute stroll through to the podium. >> mr. chairman and delegates i accept your nomination for president of the united states. >> reporter: it was a speech much about him, his family life, his wise as a successful businessman and his opponent. >> you know there's something wrong with the kind of job he's done as president when the best feeling you had was the day you voted for him. >> reporter: mr. romney tried to paint a sense of buyers remorse with multiple jabs at president obama. >> president obama promised to begin to slow the rise of the

oceans and to heal the planet, my promise is to help you and your family. >> reporter: it was a speech that reached out to key voters blocks such as women. >> as governor of massachusetts i chose a woman lieutenant governor, a woman chief of staff, half of my cabinet and senior officials were women. >> reporter: and a speech in which he says jobs were a priority as is the debt. >> we will cut the deficit and put america on track to a balanced budget. >> reporter: the applause lines were many with a promise if elected to build a better future. >> reporter: our children deserve it, our nation depends on it. the peace and freedom of the world require it and with your help we will deliver it. let us begin that future for america tonight. >> reporter: with that the balloons dropped and the delegates gave us their reactions. >> i liked about the softness of his message and what he will do for america, brings us back strong again. >> i think he stated his purpose. i think he is going to be

elected the next president. >> the message of mitt romney is the message of hope. i think it's important that people understand that what we need in america is jobs. >> reporter: the republican national convention is at a close now on to the next one, the democrats will meet in charlotte north carolina next week and we will be there. in tampa, ken pritchett. >> reporter: ken from tampa we go to walnut creek where bay area republicans gather tonight for a watch party as amber lee is here with that part of our coverage. >> reporter: frank we attended a watch party here at walnut creek at the contra costa county republican party. supporters said romney's speech gave them hope. about three dozen republicans expressed enthusiasm as the candidate took the stage. some told us romney initially was not their first choice but he now has their full support. >> our option is only romney.

-- the supporters tell us that his experience is the positive. >> say the right words like he felt them and he does. >> reporter: with ten weeks to go these romney supporters say it's now time to get down to the business of getting out the vote for their candidate. amber lee, ktvu channel 2 news. a group of students at san francisco state spent the evening on campus watching the gop convention as well. their watch party was part of a free lecture series titled 2012 presidential election issues and analysis. next week's lecture will focus on the democratic national convention and the lecture series is open to the public it takes place every thursday at san francisco state. mitt romney is the first mormon to be nominated for president. the historic achievement. and a little bit of

california star power. clint eastwood's endorsement of a candidate he doesn't always agree with. the president and the democrats will have a an opportunity next week. he's set to visit iowa, colorado, ohio and virginia beginning on saturdays. the stops come just before the democratic national convention next week in charlotte, north carolina. the president will head there on tuesday and is set to deliver his prime time address next thursday night. our live coverage of the democratic convention will begin sunday night with the 10:00 news. ken pritchett will be heading to charlotte to bring us live reports from the convention floor. california governor jerry brown is going to skip the democratic convention in instead he's staying in sacramento. the governor plans to review several bills. he also sited a death in the

family. his father-in-law died earlier this week. a firefighters died after he collapsed trying to contain a blaze inside a catholic church. as anne ruben reports he suffered a heart attack just before noon in san jose. >> reporter: sparks blew through the roof at st. patrick. crews believe the fire started near an alter at a time when several parishioners were there to pray. >> i ran out, called 911 and called the school to tell them to get the students out. >> reporter: all were uninjured. but a san jose firefighter wasn't so fortunate. frank ryan a 15 year veteran of the department went into cardiac arrest just feet from the fire trucks. his fellow paramedics used a defibrillator on him then rushed him to the hospital. >> that's what we do with our job, we put our lives on the

line. our hearts are now broken for this man. >> reporter: churchgoers are hoping for good news too. >> this is very shock and very sad to see the church burned. and i don't know how to describe this moment now. >> reporter: they are hopeful they can rebuild but in the meantime they need to find a place for nearly 4,000 parishioners to worship. >> we have a strong community i think we're all going to get things back together. >> reporter: they have yet to determine the cause of this fire and the investigation was temporarily put on hold while firefighters waited for a structural engineer to tell them it was safe to go back inside. ann rubin. homes are evacuated tonight after a wildfire has been raging out of control for two weeks now. the fire has been burned 2,000 acres.

more than 2,000 firefighters are battling the flames and their fight is far from over because that fire is now 38% contained. rough terrain and wind has made fighting the fire very difficult and the smoke was so thick today that the air attack couldn't launch. but hand crews were still able to work on the ground. >> those hand crews are the most available tools that we have. when you have steep country like that. >> reporter: lightning started this fire and so far the flames have destroyed four homes but 64 other homes are still threatened. the california air national guards 129th rescue wing out of moffet field has reached the fight. they've dropped over a quarter million gallons of water over the flames. oakland police say they've seen a spike in the number of sexual assaults in the city's

fruitvale area. when the women didn't hand over money or valuables, they were sexually assaulted. >> they are targeting latina women because they know they often time will not report because of language, immigration just how comfortable they feel reporting to the police department. >> victims have described the suspects as african american males between 20 and 40 years old. oakland police reported to a double shooting that happened in broad daylight in a busy street. the two victims were able to drive down market to 41st street where a paramedic picked them up and rush them to the hospital. an intense man hunt led to a lock down at two schools. police were cuffing the man when he somehow managed to get away. he was last seen on east lawn

there is more unsettling news for people who visited yosemite park over the summer. two more people who visited the park have come down with a potentially deadly hantavirus. janine de la vega is live from san jose where several families are worried that they may have been exposed as well. >> reporter: i spoke with a doctor from the santa clara department of health and she's received several calls that say they are worried their patients may have been exposed to the virus. >> good afternoon. >> reporter: yosemite park rangers are welcoming the rush of campers coming in for the weekends but they are also warning them about the potentially deadly hantavirus. >> if i had an option to stay

at a different part of the park i probably would have said let's get out of the signature tents and go some place else. >> reporter: a park visitor only being identified as maria says that she stayed in these cabins and told us by phone how nervous she is because it can take up to six weeks to get symptoms. so far six campers have been sickened and two have died. dr.jennifer haggerty says her office has received several calls from patients who think they have been exposed. >> if you want to be very aggressive in making sure you treat the symptoms as they come you certainly don't want to wait at home, waiting to get worse. >> reporter: the california department of public health has

notified 2,900 campers who stayed in curry village between june, july and august. maria received this e-mail but says it comes to late. >> we're just hoping our immune systems are strong enough to fight it at this point. >> reporter: it is important to note that if someone thinks they were exposed to the hantavirus they are not contagious. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. another san francisco restaurant has been shut down due to hell code violations. this is the calf -- cafe for all seasons. the city health inspector listed a number of reasons for suspending its notice. the focus on west nile virus after more positive tests in the county. the san francisco school district has pulled a fifth grade teacher from her classroom after an angry

outburst from parents. it all started when district officials transferred the 51- year-old teacher to sherman elementary earlier this week where she replaced another teacher. parents were surprised by the unexpected move and googled the new teacher's name. and they were angered when they found that she had been accused of injuring her students twice. >> you just can't expect parents to say yeah okay no problem. >> reporter: yesterday the union and the district agreed to move the teacher to a nonclassroom position. alert citizens helped nab three robbery suspects after a jewelry store hold up today. ktvu's debora villalon joins us now. >> reporter: three caught, three got away.

after they stormed this jewelry store with hammers flying you can see how they destroyed the cases. this was as far as one get away car got. pulled over on interstate 80 approaching vallejo. police say the dodge magnum was fleeing a smash and grab robbery at this jewelry store in downtown vacaville. >> they just started slamming the glass inside on the cases. >> reporter: six masked robbers scooping up jewelry, one holding a gun to the store owners head. >> we just kind of watch out for each other here on the street. you know everybody knows everybody. >> reporter: as the robbers ran, 911 calls flooded in. descriptions of the car and license plate. 20 minutes out of town. police were tailing it. then pulled it over to apprehend those inside. >> one was a juvenile and the other two were adults. apparently all three of them were from san francisco. >> reporter: exactly a week ago, robbers rampaged through a san pablo jewelry store.

and there have been others in san francisco and newark. small shops usually. debartolo's have posted a sign apologizing to customers. >> not a typical occurrence in our town thank goodness. but it's good that we did arrest three suspects. two of those suspects are 18, one is 16. and the others they are looking for may have also gotten away in a dodge. a dark colored magnum or charger. a downtown businesses are being asked to check their video surveillance to help narrow that down. the stolen jewelry it appears was in the car that got away because they didn't find it in the car they caught. debora villalon. an investigation is under way after two correctional officers were attacked by two inmates. the officers were attacked as they attempted to return the

inmate to his cell. the officers were stabbed and slashed in the head neck and face. they were taken to the hospital and are expected to recover. people along the gulf coast switched into recovery mode today after tropical depression isaac weakened and pushed slowly north. people living along the gulf coast they are still dealing with flooding. some who evacuated ahead of isaac returned home today to survey the damage. and in some neighborhoods water was waste high forcing boats to get around. authorities were once again busy rescuing people from their flooded homes. at least two deaths in louisiana and mississippi have been linked to isaac. along the louisiana, mississippi state line 60,000 residents have been ordered to evacuate. the storm weakened a dam along the tangipahoa river and it's now threatening to send flood waters through near by communities in both states. in order to prevent that officials have launched a controlled water release to try

two wayward dolphins have made their way to an unusual location. they are up a creek near the san francisco airport. and they are drawing a crowd as ktvu's patti lee tells us it's not the first time. >> they're coming closer. >> reporter: dolphins were the last thing the gordado family expected to find at this creek. >> we're actually getting ready to see the game. the 49ers game. we stopped by here and i saw them. >> reporter: coma creek which runs through this industrial park of san francisco may not be an obvious spot for island watching. >> in hawaii not here. >> reporter: but the water

surrounding northern california from monterey on up is the area bottle nose dolphins call home. >> it's amazing to see dolphins up close but i feel bad i hope they're okay. >> reporter: the experts tell us it's unlikely the dolphins are in distress. they were first spotted in the area last night and the spectacle drew crowds all day. >> people are required to stay at least 100 feet away from them at all times. so we would ask anyone who is near by certainly can look at these animals and appreciate them because it's not too often that you get too close to them but we want people to maintain a very safe distance. >> reporter: this is the second time this summer dolphins have made an appearance here. the last sighting was in july. that time the dolphin eventually swam back to sea. the dolphins appear to be playing and at this range you can actually hear them talking to each other. scientists tell us if they're still here in 24 hours they will likely jump in and take a closer look. in south san francisco, patti

when mitt romney accepted the republican nomination it marked a historic moment in american politics. for the first time a mormon has become a major party candidate. ktvu's jana katsuyama, she's been looking into whether romney's faith will impact the nomination. >> reporter: although mitt romney has not said very much on the campaign trail tonight he did touch on that part of his life as a mormon. tonight san francisco republicans joined the gop in florida putting their faith in mitt romney to win the presidency. >> we were mormons and growing up in michigan that might have seemed unusual or out of place

but i don't remember it that way. my team cared more about what teams we followed than what church we went to. >> reporter: today at the mormon temple in oakland we spoke to the spokesman about romney's achievement. >> it is historic just like it was historic for john f. kennedy. it's historic for mitt romney, for governor romney. >> reporter: romney's identity as a mormon raised some questions in voters. just like when john f. kennedy walked a thin line. >> it's importantly necessary for me to state once again, not what kind of church i believe in, for that should be important only to me. but what kind of america i believe in. >> reporter: still faith matters to some voters. while a june gallup poll found 43% of americans did not know

romney was a mormon. >> i have friends in congregation who have voted for president obama and will again. and i have friends who will vote for romney. >> we all have freedom of religion, whatever the case might be. that really shouldn't matter. >> reporter: and perhaps as a sign of the times, mitt romney's choice for vice president candidate, paul ryan is a roman catholic. reporting live in san francisco tonight, jana katsuyama, ktvu channel 2 news. former florida governor jeb bush spoke at tonight's convention and he had a message for president obama. >> mr. president it is time to stop blaming your predecessor for your failed economic policies. you were dealt a tough hand, you were dealt a tough hand but your policies have not worked. >> reporter: jeb bush went on to say that it's time for the president to take responsibility for his actions.

people who lost their job by no fault of their own to find new jobs. the state senate approved a bill today that allows nurse practitioners, nurse mid-wives and physician assistants to perform aspiration abortion. that's when a suction tube is used to empty the uterus. it was set to expire this month. new at 10:00, a rash of dead birds testing positive has contra costa officials stepping up their efforts to keep the virus in check. eric rasmussen is live where crews are back out fogging for those mosquitoes right now, eric. >> reporter: they are frank, you know today vector control announced they found eight more dead birds in contra costa county that tested positive for west nile. crews are actually out here tonight because they said they

found a group of mosquitoes that were infected with west nile. the goal is to stop them from spreading that virus to people. relatively safe for human but deadly to mosquitoes, vector control says the insecticide is more important than ever. >> april through september the the months that people most get imfected. >> reporter: in brentwood alone, nine different mosquito samples have tested positive this year. while there have been no human cases reported yet, a rise around the country have them on high alert. >> we know west nile is grossly under reported. that means people are getting this disease we just don't know about it. >> reporter: the symptoms can include fever, head and body aches. even though less than 5% of

federal investigators are joining forces with police to try to identify the body of a woman who was found in a trash can. police are now working with the fbi and department of justice. the woman is believed to have been in her 20s probably asian or latino with dark hair between 106 and 130 pounds. it's still not clear how she died. a man from alamo is under arrest tonight after a fight involving his neighbor turned deadly. sheriff deputies arrested 59- year-old michael litman at his home today in the 3,000 block of stone gate drive. litman and his neighbor 55-year- old doris penaco got into a fight on monday. penaco was thrown to the ground, hit her head and later

died. litmo faces several charges now including suspicion of murder. 34-year-old paul ray castillo was given a life sentence for a crime spree that included the murder of a campbell woman. before the sentence was read he apologized to the victim's family. cindy gwen died during a crime spree that included shooting a man at a gas station, stealing two cars, trying to run over a police officer and then carjacking and kidnapping gwen. the suspect in the aurora colorado movie massacre reportedly tried to call his psychiatrist just moments before that attack began. holmes appeared in court today. at issue is a package that is protected by client/doctor protection. in news of the world

tonight iran's supreme leader addressed leaders of a nonaligned movement. during his speech the iotola called the u.n. council a dictatorship. he also insisted iran is not trying to make nuclear weapons but wants peaceful nuclear energy. iran is investigating the death of two women. the killer wrote the name of the band in the victim's blood on the wall of the apartment. the message was scrawled in english. the band was recently sent to prison for its anti putin stance. another bomb scare after two unexploded devices from world war ii were found. this is the scene last night in numic. this was the scene last night

cal says clint eastwood made people tonight but he can't make them vote. mitt romney has to do that himself. rita williams, ktvu. >> tonight maneta san jose airport is celebrating a milestone. it ranked number one on the state for on time performance. transportation officials say san jose had the best on time record of california's nine medium to large airports. oak -- oakland ranked fifth. the east contra costa fire protection district has been given the green light to reopen fire stations and rehire layed off firefighters. the district of directors has voted to normally accept a $7.8 million grant from fema. the two year funding allows the district to reopen two or three of the stations shuttered last month because of budget shortfalls and boosting staff.

the closed stations are in brentwood, nightson. frys has agreed to settle a sexual harassment case. a supervisor in washington was fired after reporting an assistant store manager for sexually harassing a younger sales associate. a lawsuit was filed in federal court and frys agreed to the settlement instead. the money will be split between the fired supervisor and the fired employee. they wouldn't reveal which company due to federal rules, but they say that the company withheld electricity to drive prices higher. they say it is not a repeat of the early 2,000 when energy traders went wild and took billions from excess profits. officials fined six bay area hospitals for allegations

and concord. today's numbers dropped off 10 to 15 even 20 degrees in some places. with this fog plowing in here they're going to draw a few more degrees. tomorrow's lows mostly in the 70s. the cooling trend is continuing as we head into the weekend but things start to warm up on saturday and monday. that changes the second part of the weekend looks pretty good. right now the marine layer is deep. it's 1,800 feet or so. you get 800 feet of extra moisture spilling in over the top. that's where we are now. here's the fog forcast for tomorrow morning. you see that big footprint. that's almost how much fog we have now. by tomorrow morning it's all the way up to napa. look at this the oranges and reds are gone. sacramento is looking at lower 80s and 70s. this low pressure center has been the trigger for this cooling allow it is marine
